At the beginning of the Second World War, Pista Novak reluctantly closed the doors of his family's freight forwarding business in Budapest and joined the Czech Army to fight the Nazis before joining the French Foreign Legion and following Dunkirk, the British Army. Once demobilised Pista, wishing to assimilate to his adopted country, changed his name to Richard Howard and found employment in the shipping department of Joseph Lucas Ltd where he remained until he had saved enough money to start up the family business again, here in the UK.
